The First Step Program has a comprehensive range of medical programs and psycho-social programs (such as counselling or employment assistance). The field of addiction medicine is a complicated one with much disagreement among professional about which treatments are the most effective. However, everyone agrees on one thing:
Drug or alcohol addiction is a chronic, relapsing illness, and a comprehensive approach that considers many aspects of a person’s life is the surest path to rehabilitation.
There is another maxim by which the First Step Program operates:
Determining the best intervention or combination of interventions (i.e. assessment) is as important as the quality of those interventions.
It is important that patients and family members come to First Step with an open mind. Someone may think that they definitely want to go on the methadone program for example. However, it takes multiple, thorough consultations for our addiction medicine specialists, working with their patients, to determine the safest and most effective path in each case.
